Export performance of red chilli is not satisfactory

Hyderabad. Red chilli ranks first in terms of quantity and income among the spices and spice products exported from India. Its export performance during the current year is very weak as compared to last year.

According to the available data, during the first four months of the current financial year i.e. April-July 2024, the total export of red chilli from the country shrunk to 97,282 tonnes, which was 32,432 tonnes less than the shipment of 1,29,714 tonnes in the same period last year.

Under this, its export fell from 43,656 tonnes to 31,468 tonnes in April, from 38,712 tonnes to 21,180 tonnes in May, from 21,477 tonnes to 20,675 tonnes in June and in July the export fell from 25,869 tonnes to 23,959 tonnes. Good quantities of red chilli were also shipped in the remaining months of the financial year 2023-24, taking its gross exports to a high of 4,25,425 tonnes.

According to the data received, during the financial year 2023-24, 21,721 tonnes of red chilli were exported in August 2023, 18,483 tonnes in September, 25,427 tonnes in October, 23,872 tonnes in November and 26,886 tonnes in December 2023, while its quantity was recorded at 30,862 tonnes in January 2024, 63,231 tonnes in February and 85,230 tonnes in March 2024.

India is the leading producer and exporter of red chilli in the world. The arrival of its new goods starts from January February and it is exported brilliantly from the country during the first quarter of the year.

Its export performance remains good till May and after that it starts declining. Indian red chilli is exported in large quantities to many other countries including China, Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are its major producing states. This year the sowing of the crop has been almost normal, although the weather and monsoon conditions in the major producing areas have not been completely favorable.
