Excellent Sesame Production Expected Due to Increase in Sowing Area

New Delhi: According to a report by the Indian Oilseeds and Produce Export Promotion Council (IOPEPC), the current Kharif season has witnessed not only a significant increase in the national sowing area for sesame but also improved crop conditions due to favorable weather.

The Council's survey report indicates that the combined sowing area for Kharif sesame across the top four producing states—Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh—rose by 37.2 percent to reach 711,892 hectares. The average yield rate is also estimated to have improved, reaching 142 kg per hectare. Consequently, a substantial increase in production is anticipated.

Data from the Union Ministry of Agriculture reveals that the total national area under sesame cultivation surged to 11.10 lakh hectares this Kharif season, marking an increase of 1.30 lakh hectares over the previous year's sowing area of 9.80 lakh hectares. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh received good rainfall this season, while rainfall conditions in Gujarat are also considered largely normal. High market prices and a significant hike in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) have boosted farmers' enthusiasm for sesame cultivation.
