Hyderabad. In Telangana—a major producer of paddy and cotton in South India—efforts have been intensified to mitigate the impact of the El Niño weather cycle and protect the agricultural sector and farmers from potential damage. A meeting, chaired by the state’s Deputy Chief Minister, is expected to take place today, October 28, to deliberate on this issue and propose necessary measures.
Due to a cyclonic storm originating in the Bay of Bengal, Telangana—along with other neighboring states—is likely to experience strong winds and heavy rainfall. While this could create somewhat favorable conditions for sowing crops in drought-affected areas, the intense rain also carries the risk of damaging paddy, cotton, turmeric, and red chili crops.
During the southwest monsoon season, the uneven distribution of rainfall in Telangana led to drought conditions in some districts, adversely affecting the sowing of Kharif crops. The serious threat of El Niño persists, and robust preparations are underway to address it. The government intends to give serious consideration to any suggestions put forward by opposition parties during this proposed meeting.
