New Delhi. Indian pulses importers have urged the Central Government to impose import duty on yellow peas because its cheap import has softened the price in the domestic market. Pulses importers say that cheap import of yellow peas is affecting the dynamics of the domestic market.

Apart from this, it has also come to light that some importers are importing huge quantities of yellow peas from abroad and making stock of it and are reluctant to release it in the domestic market.

Due to this, the objective of the government is not being fulfilled for which the decision was taken to make the import of yellow peas duty free.

It is understood that the government may consider making the rule of disclosing stock details a bit stricter for the importers of yellow peas.

In fact, the objective of the government behind allowing duty free import of yellow peas was that it would help in curbing the rise in the prices of gram because yellow peas are considered a better alternative to gram. But despite the import of 15-16 lakh tonnes of yellow peas,

there has been no significant impact on the prices of gram. The interesting fact is that now the import of Desi Chana has also been made duty free till 31 October 2024.

Due to low domestic production of Chana and strong demand, the price level remains high. The government had already instructed the pulses traders to disclose the stock details, whereas now it may be necessary to give the details of purchase and sale twice a week.
