New Delhi. According to estimates released recently at the 10th Spice Meet Seminar organized by the Federation of Indian Spice Stockholders (FISS) in Ahmedabad, the production of fennel, cumin, coriander, and fenugreek in the country is projected to decline during the current season.
Cumin
In the major producing states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, cumin is estimated to be sown on 11.18 lakh hectares this year, compared to 11.71 lakh hectares last year. In Gujarat, sowing area this year was around 3.74 lakh hectares, compared to 4.55 lakh hectares last year. In Rajasthan, sowing area is estimated to be 7.44 lakh hectares, compared to 7.16 lakh hectares last year. Due to a decrease in the total sown area, the total cumin production in the country this year is estimated to be 93.29 lakh bags (each bag containing 55 kg), compared to 97.93 lakh bags last year.
Fennel
During the current season, a 16 percent decrease in fennel sowing is being estimated in Gujarat, the major producing state. However, sowing in Rajasthan and other states is expected to be similar to last year. Consequently, fennel sowing has been estimated to be on 85.96 thousand hectares, compared to 92.20 thousand hectares last year. Due to the decrease in sown area, the fennel production in the country during the current season is estimated to be 17.97 lakh bags, compared to 18.68 lakh bags last year.
Coriander
This year, estimates of a decrease in coriander sowing area have been released in the major coriander producing states. Coriander is primarily produced in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. According to information received, a 12 percent decrease in the area under coriander cultivation this year is estimated at 2.98 lakh hectares. Last year, sowing was done on 3.36 lakh hectares. Due to the reduced sowing, coriander production has also been estimated at 96.55 lakh bags compared to 1.10 crore bags last year.
Fenugreek
Due to producers not receiving a fair price for their produce last season, fenugreek sowing has decreased by 12 percent to 1.14 lakh hectares. Last year, sowing was done on 1.30 lakh hectares. Fenugreek is produced in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. During the current season, fenugreek production is estimated at 1,520,448 quintals, compared to 1,716,400 quintals last year.
