According to the Export Sales data released on Thursday, total export commitments for old crop corn reached 68.875 MMT, which is 30% higher than the same period last year. This now represents about 82% of the USDA’s export projection, while the average pace is around 86%, indicating that the current sales pace is slightly slower than normal.
Commitment of Traders data showed that as of March 24, managed money increased their net long position in corn futures and options by 55,744 contracts, taking the total net long position to 284,548 contracts. Meanwhile, commercial traders increased their net short position by 45,429 contracts, bringing the total to 567,545 contracts.
Ahead of the USDA March Intentions report due next week, traders expect NASS to report corn acreage at around 94.37 million acres. If realized, this would be a decline of about 4.4 million acres from last year. Grain Stocks for March 1 are estimated at 9.104 billion bushels, which would be about 957 million bushels higher than a year ago.
