Mumbai: The All India Distillers Association—the apex body representing manufacturers of ethanol, bio-energy, and potable alcohol—has urged the government to raise the target for ethanol blending in petrol from 20 percent to 30 percent.
According to the Association, the government should also focus on expanding the scope of usage for ethanol-blended petrol. Its application could be increased in both domestic and industrial cooking.
In a letter addressed to the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, the Association suggested exploring the feasibility of blending ethanol in diesel—similar to petrol—in order to reduce energy costs and bolster the nation's energy security.
The Association notes that the target of 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol was achieved ahead of schedule in 2025; therefore, this target should now be raised.
The domestic industry stands ready to supply ethanol in accordance with this new target. The government has signaled some positive indications in this regard, thereby boosting the industry's optimism.
