Guwahati. The General Government has planned to provide sugar, pulses and salt at subsidized rates to eligible beneficiaries and this may start in October-November.

This was announced by the Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister of Assam in a meeting held in Kamrup Metro on August 20. October-November is the peak festival season month.

An awareness campaign is being run in this regard. This was started by the Food Department in Kamrup Metropolitan District and representatives of fair price shopkeepers and village panchayat government committees were called together in the meeting.

The Food Minister said that the campaign to provide sugar, salt and pulses to eligible beneficiaries through PDS at subsidized rates will be started in 10 districts of Assam from October 1 and then it will be expanded to 25 districts. It will start in all the districts by November.

The Food Minister asked the owners of fair price shops selling government products to ensure that the subsidized goods are distributed in a fair and transparent manner and no deserving beneficiary is deprived of it.

Under the provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013, ration card holders of the entire state will get the benefit of this scheme.

The Food Minister said that this scheme is being started with the aim of reducing the pressure of inflation and making essential commodities available to the poor at low prices.

The government is trying to ensure the supply of sugar and pulses. It is known that sugar is not produced in Assam and the production of pulses is also very low, so the government will have to get it from other states.
