As of December 2024, India has seen a total arrival of 101.50 lakh tonnes of mustard in wholesale markets and government procurement centers. The arrival trend has been on a decline for the last two months due to the off-season period, and sowing is also lagging behind last year’s figures. The mustard harvest, particularly for early-sown crops, is expected to begin sporadically starting in February 2025.
Here is a breakdown of the mustard arrivals from March 2024 to December 2024:
81.50 lakh tonnes reached wholesale markets.
- March: 15.50 lakh tonnes
- April: 15 lakh tonnes
- May: 11 lakh tonnes
- June: 9 lakh tonnes
- July: 8.50 lakh tonnes
- August: 6 lakh tonnes
- September: 5 lakh tonnes
- October: 5 lakh tonnes
- November: 3.50 lakh tonnes
- December: 3 lakh tonnes
20 lakh tonnes were supplied to government procurement centers, all purchased by agencies like NAFED and HAFED.
- March: 10,000 tonnes
- April: 13.80 lakh tonnes
- May: 5.60 lakh tonnes
- June: 50,000 tonnes
Government agencies had an outstanding stock of 7.50 lakh tonnes at the start of 2024 and purchased 20 lakh tonnes in total. As of January 1, 2025, they had 11.50 lakh tonnes of stock left after selling 16 lakh tonnes.
Starting with a stock of 108 lakh tonnes on March 1, 2024, 101.50 lakh tonnes arrived during the year. After crushing 98 lakh tonnes, farmers were left with 6.50 lakh tonnes as of January 1, 2025. Out of the crushed mustard, about 4 lakh tonnes remained with crushers, processors, and stockists.
Thus, 22 lakh tonnes of mustard were available in the country by January 1, 2025. The arrival of 6-7 lakh tonnes is expected in February 2025, which will continue to be processed as well.
For the Rabi season of 2023-24, 115 lakh tonnes of mustard was initially estimated for production, with 7 lakh tonnes crushed in February 2024. Following the adjustments in the production estimates, the revised estimate stands at 108 lakh tonnes.
