Hyderabad. In Telangana, an important agricultural producer state of South India, the total production area of crops in the current Kharif (Vanakalam) season has shrunk to about 123 lakh acres,

which is 5 lakh and 6 lakh acres less than last year's sowing area of 128 lakh acres and the normal average area of 129 lakh acres respectively.

Although officially the sowing season will continue there till the end of September, but in reality the sowing process is almost over. As a result, there is no possibility of much improvement in the area under Kharif crops there.

Along with the decline in sowing area, Vanakalam (Kharif) crops have also suffered a lot due to heavy rains and floods in Telangana this time.

The Union Agriculture Minister himself has accepted this. The data received shows that this time the total production area of Kharif crops in Telangana has come down to the lowest level in the last five years.

Till 12th September, cultivation of Kharif crops was possible in about 95 percent of the normal average area in the state.

Under this, sowing of paddy, cotton and pulses has been affected to a great extent. Due to recent torrential rains and floods, Kharif crops in more than 20 lakh acres of area in Telangana have been completely or partially destroyed, due to which there is a possibility of a huge decline in its gross production.

The crops which have suffered the most damage include sugarcane, paddy, pulses, millets, oilseeds and cotton.

Telangana is among the leading states producing paddy and rice. The paddy production area there has come down from 62 lakh acres last year to 59 lakh acres this time.

Apart from this, the sowing area of cotton also fell from 18.01 lakh hectares to 17.39 lakh hectares.
