20 thousand tons of tur sold in six auctions in Tanzania

Mtwara. In Tanzania, an important producer of pigeon pea (tuvar) in Africa, the preparation for harvesting the new crop started about a month ago and about 20 thousand tons of tur were sold in six auctions held in the Matwara region between mid-August and 10 September, which earned the farmers an income of 36 billion shillings (Tanzania's currency).

The farmers sold this 20 thousand tons of tur through the electronic auction system organized by the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange. It was sold in Matwara, Masasi and Nanyumbu Agricultural Cooperative Union.

According to the marketing officer of the union, the seventh auction of tur took place in Mikindani area, which is located in the same division.

There, its price was recorded between 1760 shillings on the top and 1660 shillings per kilogram on the bottom.

According to official sources, more quantity of tur is being collected in the warehouses by the cooperative union which will be sold in the next auction.

There has been a good increase in the production of tur in Tanzania during the current marketing season of 2024-25, so the union is expected to get a huge stock of it.

A total of 1338 tonnes of tur was sold during the seventh auction and its highest price was recorded at 1760 shillings per kg and the lowest price was 1693 shillings per kg.

Officials have appealed to the farmers to pay special attention to the quality of tur to ensure better returns.

There is limited domestic consumption of tur in Tanzania, so it is exported on a large scale in Asia, including India. There is tremendous demand for tur in Asia and especially in India.
