Wheat Prices Fluctuate in Response to Arrivals and Buying Activity
New Delhi: During the week of April 11–17, the pace of wheat arrivals in key markets across major producing states remained sluggish, preventing government agencies from accelerating their procurement efforts. The quality of the wheat grain arriving in the markets was also observed to be poor. Reflecting the dynamics of demand and supply, wheat prices witnessed fluctuations—rising by ₹100–200 per quintal in some markets, while declining by a similar margin in others.
Delhi
In Delhi, wheat prices remained stable at ₹2,525–₹2,550 per quintal. Conversely, prices surged by ₹200 in Rajkot, reaching ₹2,000–₹2,700 per quintal, and rose by ₹100 in Itarsi (MP), reaching ₹2,340–₹2,700 per quintal. On the other hand, prices declined by ₹171 in Indore, settling at ₹2,230–₹3,000 per quintal, and fell by ₹50 in Baran (Rajasthan), dropping to ₹2,400–₹2,650 per quintal.
Uttar Pradesh
In the markets of Uttar Pradesh, wheat prices generally remained firm, registering an upward correction of ₹55 to ₹110 per quintal. Wheat arrivals in these markets have begun to pick up, and traders, stockists, millers, and processors are demonstrating keen interest in procuring the grain.
Maharashtra / Haryana
In Maharashtra, prices in the Jalna market softened by ₹100 per quintal. While government procurement of wheat is proceeding well in Haryana, the pace remains significantly slow in other states. An interesting observation is that in most markets, wheat prices are currently trading below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹2,585 per quintal. Moving forward, the volume of wheat arrivals is expected to increase rapidly.
