Paddy and rice prices rise due to strong demand from millers and exporters
New Delhi. Kharif paddy is arriving abundantly in important markets in major producing states, yet prices rose by ₹100-₹300 per quintal during the week of November 22-28 due to strong buying by millers, processors, and exporters. Most stocks of general grade paddy are reaching government procurement centers, where it is being purchased heavily at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), while Basmati and 'A' grade paddy are arriving in open markets and are being purchased by traders and rice millers.
Delhi
During the week under review, Delhi's Narela Mandi witnessed daily arrivals of 30,000-40,000 bags of paddy, and due to strong buying, prices rose by ₹100-₹150 per quintal. Najafgarh Mandi also received 10,000-12,000 bags of paddy daily, but the demand did not increase significantly.
Chhattisgarh
3,000-4,000 bags of paddy were supplied to Bhatpara Mandi in Chhattisgarh, and 5,000-7,000 bags to Rajim Mandi. Generally, prices remained strong there as well.
In Amritsar, Punjab, despite a daily arrival of 25,000-35,000 bags of paddy, prices remained bullish. The price of 1121 hand paddy jumped by ₹295 to ₹3,850/₹4,225 per quintal, but the price of combines declined. In Tarn Taran Mandi, 15,000-25,000 bags of paddy were supplied daily, and prices improved by ₹50-₹75.
Uttar Pradesh
Various markets in Uttar Pradesh, including Etah, Mainpuri, Jahangirabad, Shahjahanpur, Aligarh, and Khair, are experiencing a significant inflow of Basmati rice, and a rise in prices of ₹100-150 has provided a significant incentive for farmers to sell their produce. Large quantities of rice also arrived in the markets of Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
Rice
As far as rice is concerned, demand is now increasing in major importing countries. Gulf countries are trying to increase Basmati rice imports, while Indian exporters are also seeking to reach new markets with their Basmati rice.
Amritsar
Due to improved trading in Basmati rice in Amritsar, the prices of 1509 Sela and 1718 Steamed rice have increased by ₹300 per quintal, while prices of other varieties also remained strong. The price of rice also increased by Rs 100 to Rs 300 per quintal in the city market of Uttarakhand and by Rs 100-200 per quintal in the Naya Bazaar of Delhi.
