Mumbai. The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) notes that while India's food processing industry is undergoing rapid growth and expansion, the country's economic progress and evolving dietary habits are simultaneously driving a significant surge in the demand and consumption of processed food products. This presents a promising opportunity for U.S. exporters to market their products within the Indian market.
India aims to join the ranks of developed nations by 2047 and to expand its economy to reach the $5 trillion mark. The food processing industry is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving this objective, and the sector itself is undergoing rapid transformation. The United States manufactures a wide array of processed food products for which India could prove to be a highly viable export market.
Historically, traditional and staple-based diets predominated in India; however, the landscape is now shifting, and the consumption of processed food products is rising rapidly. India's food processing industry ranks among the fastest-growing sectors in the country. Its market size is projected to expand from $355 billion in 2024 to reach $535 billion by 2026.
