Limited paddy arrivals in select markets; rice prices firm up slightly
New Delhi: The market is currently in the lean (off-season) period for paddy supply. Transplantation of Kharif paddy is underway, though the sown area lags behind last year's figures. New paddy arrivals are expected to begin in October; however, Basmati paddy arrivals often commence in September in certain markets of Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi
Currently, regular supplies of paddy in limited quantities are reaching Delhi's Narela market, Chhattisgarh's Bhatapara and Rajim markets, and Rajasthan's Kota and Bundi markets. Additionally, sporadic arrivals of Basmati paddy are reported from Amritsar and Tarn Taran in Punjab, as well as Taraori in Haryana. Markets in Uttar Pradesh have begun to see a lull in activity.
Arrivals
During the week of August 22–28, the price of '1509' variety paddy dropped by ₹115 to settle at ₹3,600–4,000 per quintal in Narela market, driven by limited arrivals and weak demand. Daily arrivals stood at 3,500 bags in Bhatapara and ranged between 2,500 and 7,000 bags in Rajim; prices remained largely stable amidst normal offtake. No significant price fluctuations were observed in the Kota and Bundi markets either.
Rice
Rice prices remained stable across most centers. Prices for certain varieties and grades of rice saw an increase of ₹100–200 per quintal in Delhi's Naya Bazar and Amritsar (Punjab), while prices for other varieties remained unchanged.
Exports
In reality, the paddy and rice market witnessed a lack of activity or buzz during the week under review. Basmati rice exports are being impacted by the prevailing uncertainty regarding the movement of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Sanctions
Indian Basmati rice exporters are concerned due to the reimposition of economic sanctions on Iran by the US and the blocking of payment channels via the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
