The Central Government has set an export quota of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar for the 2024-25 marketing season, which is distributed among various sugar mills.
However, sugar mills that have violated guidelines—specifically those selling more sugar than their allocated free sale quota for the domestic market—have been stripped of their export quotas.
The Food Ministry has clarified that these mills, including 18 from Uttar Pradesh, will not be allowed to export sugar.
In total, 509 mills have received export quotas, while 24 mills have been deprived of it for non-compliance with the rules.
The disqualification also extends to 11 mills from Andhra Pradesh and 16 mills from other states due to different reasons.
The guidelines state that the mills must complete the export of their assigned quota by 30 September 2025.
The government’s move aims to ensure that domestic sugar supply remains stable by preventing excessive sales beyond the prescribed limits.
