Severe Shortage of Rice Storage Space in Punjab; CM Raises Concern
★ The Chief Minister of Punjab has urged the central government to begin paddy procurement from September 15 instead of October 31.
★ The state has a storage capacity of 22 million tonnes for paddy/rice, while nearly 25 million tonnes of wheat and rice are procured annually.
★ To create space ahead of procurement, FCI has floated tenders for rice sales under the OMSS scheme.
★ IGrain India believes that due to lower rice prices in domestic markets, FCI’s sales may remain limited, similar to last year.
★ Additionally, rice is now being used for ethanol production as well.
