Torrential rains will help in sowing of Kharif crops in various states

Thiruvananthapuram. The latest report from the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states during the current week, including Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha,

Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In addition, heavy rains are also expected in Goa, Konkan, the Eastern and Western Ghats, the Central Ocean region and Eastern Gujarat.

These widespread rains are likely to provide a boost to farmers by accelerating the pace of Kharif crop sowing. The sown area for Kharif crops has already crossed 258 lakh hectares and is expected to rise rapidly in the coming days.

According to the Meteorological Department, over the next few days, normal to heavy rainfall is likely in remaining parts of Odisha, eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Jharkhand,

Bihar, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Madhya Pradesh, eastern Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch, Vidarbha, Konkan and Telangana. However, most states in South India and the Northeast, where the monsoon arrived earlier, are not included in this forecast.

According to the Climate Forecast System, by July 20, 2025, most Indian states are expected to receive normal or above-normal rainfall, which could significantly boost the sowing area of Kharif crops.

However, central Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch and western and central parts of Maharashtra may receive below-average rainfall, and this trend may continue from July 21 through early August. Rainfall deficiencies may also affect western Madhya Pradesh and Konkan.

Good monsoon rains are vital for the cultivation of Kharif crops, as nearly half of India's agricultural area depends on rainfall.

Compared to last year, the sowing area of nearly all Kharif crops is currently ahead, which is a positive indicator. Most Kharif sowing takes place during July and August, and this year, farmers are receiving significant support from favourable monsoon conditions.
