There is a possibility of a decrease in production in the current sugar season
There is an anticipated decrease in sugar production during the current season. ISMA has estimated that 9.54 million tons of sugar will be produced by December 31, a 15.6% decrease from last year's 11.13 million tons. The consumption of sugar for ethanol production is expected to reach 4 million tons, up from 2.15 million tons last year. The number of mills has also decreased.
In Uttar Pradesh, sugar production reached 3.28 million tons in the first three months, down from 3.45 million tons last year. Maharashtra's production has decreased from 3.82 million tons last year to 3 million tons, and Karnataka's production is down from 2.49 million tons to 2.04 million tons.
Earlier, ISMA had estimated a total production of 33.3 million tons, including sugar used for ethanol. Sugar consumption in 2024-25 is estimated to be 28 million tons, down from 29.1 million tons last year. The sugar sales quota for the first four months was reduced by 700,000 tons compared to last year, with 9.2 million tons allocated by the Ministry of Consumers. ISMA estimates that a quota of 18.8 million tons may be released between February and September.
