The price of gram continues to fluctuate
The prices of chana (chickpea) are experiencing fluctuations. Several vessels are arriving from Australia, with two vessels carrying about 30,000 tons of chana each expected at ports this week. In addition, more vessels from Australia are being dispatched to India. Australian farmers are aiming to export the maximum quantity by March 31, 2025, in order to meet shipment deadlines.
Chana's harvesting period is quicker than that of lentils (masoor), which is why farmers tend to avoid stocking chana. It is expected that imports of desi chana may continue after March 31, 2025. The large import of lentils has already impacted chana consumption. While this year's sowing is expected to be lower than last year's, productivity is anticipated to be good.
The MSP (Minimum Support Price) for chana is ₹5,650 per quintal. In Rajasthan, the largest producer state, chana prices are ₹6,050 in Jodhpur and ₹6,300 in Bikaner. Prices may dip below MSP until the new harvest arrives. The government is likely to ensure the stock of pulses, especially chana, in the central pool, as chana accounts for around 40% of total pulse production.
Given the extension of the lentil import deadline, the dispatch of new vessels from Australia, and weak demand for pulses, it's advisable to avoid trading on the upside. There is little expectation for a significant price surge in the chana market in the near future.
