Telangana is rapidly progressing in rice production

Hyderabad. Production of paddy and rice in Telangana, an important agricultural producer state of South India, has increased rapidly in recent years.
The third advance estimate released by the Union Agriculture Ministry has presented a better estimate of Indian rice production in which Telangana's production played an important role.
Now Telangana has also been included in the list of top producing states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Chhattisgarh.
Telangana produced 166.31 lakh tonnes of rice which is about 12 percent of the total national production. Earlier it was known for its progressive agricultural policies and emphasis on crop diversification,
but with the construction of many dams and reservoirs for irrigation and the laying of a network of canals, farmers started giving priority to paddy cultivation and in a few years Telangana strengthened its position in rice production. Paddy is cultivated there on a large scale in both Kharif and Rabi seasons.
The Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated domestic production of 1367 lakh tonnes of rice during the 2023-24 season, which is 9.45 lakh tonnes more than the estimated production of 1357.55 lakh tonnes for the 2022-23 season.
According to the third advance estimate, Telangana became the largest rice producing state in India with 166.31 lakh tonnes during the 2023-24 season, while Uttar Pradesh came second with 157.22 lakh tonnes. After this,
West Bengal produced 151.18 lakh tonnes, Punjab 143.90 lakh tonnes and Odisha 101.30 lakh tonnes of rice. These five states remained at the top in rice production.
Uttar Pradesh's share in the total domestic production of rice was about 11.5 percent while West Bengal's contribution was recorded at 11 percent. Despite this, Punjab remained the state contributing the most rice to the central pool.
Its share in the total domestic production of rice was 10.5 percent while Orissa's share was recorded at 7.4 percent. Apart from this, rice is also produced on a large scale in some other states including Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
