The Telangana government has signed a significant agreement with the Philippines to export one lakh tonnes of rice, which will include the 1010 and 1064 varieties.

A team of quality control officials from the Philippines recently inspected a rice mill in Nalgonda district and confirmed that the mill meets the required export quality standards. Following the inspection, discussions were held and the export agreement was finalized.

However, there is a challenge regarding the different husk content requirements for domestic and export rice.

According to the Custom Milling Rice (CMR) guidelines, rice produced for domestic distribution must contain 25% husk, whereas only 5% husk is allowed in rice for export.

This discrepancy has led to requests from millers for compensation due to the need for adjustments in the milling process to meet export standards.

In the initial phase, 40,000 tonnes of rice will be shipped to the Philippines, with the remaining 60,000 tonnes to follow.

Telangana is a leading rice producer and exporter, and the state also contributes a significant amount to India's central rice pool. The state government is currently considering the request for compensation from the millers.
