Thanjavur. A sugar mill located in Thirumandan Gudi, Tamil Nadu has been closed since 2019 because its then management had taken loans worth hundreds of crores of rupees in the name of farmers and did not repay them. The management accepted being a defaulter while the sugarcane growers in whose name the loan was taken started an indefinite agitation. This agitation entered the 1000th day on 25 August.
The farmers are demanding special action against the then management of this sugar mill as well as all those who had taken loans worth crores of rupees in the name of the mill before its closure in the year 2019.
Since then, sugarcane farmers have been protesting in front of this private sugar mill. On August 25, a group of farmers tried to protest in the premises of Kumbakonam court but the police stopped the farmers from doing so as the protest was not allowed. Later, 12 farmers were caught and locked in a marriage hall.
On the other hand, another farmer group staged a sit-in protest in Bhaktapuri traffic area near the court premises. The farmers demanded that the loan taken by the sugar mill management in their name should be cancelled so that the farmers do not face any difficulty in taking a new loan.
This group also demanded a CBI inquiry into the fraud and forgery of the farmers. A case was filed by the farmers in this regard. The farmer group said that the matter should be settled as soon as possible because the farmers are facing inconvenience in taking loans.
