Lucknow. Data released by the Sugarcane Department of Uttar Pradesh shows that during the current marketing season (October-September) of 2023-24, till May 30, 2024, 98.03 crore tonnes of sugarcane was crushed in all the mills of the state and the total production of sugar reached 103.80 lakh tonnes.

The average recovery rate of sugar from sugarcane increased to 11.51 percent. The process of crushing of sugarcane and production of sugar in the state is almost over and most of the units have been closed.

Sugar mills were supplied with adequate sugarcane by the farmers at the right time and hence the crushing process was completed uninterruptedly.

Although ISMA and other associations and organizations had estimated the production of more than 110 lakh tonnes of sugar in Uttar Pradesh during the current season as there was a tremendous increase in the area of sugarcane, but in some parts of the state, the sugarcane crop suffered a lot due to the outbreak of insects and diseases.

Earlier it was believed that Uttar Pradesh would leave Maharashtra behind and become the largest producer of sugar in the country this time, but the latest figures show that this is not possible.

At the national level, about 320 lakh tonnes of sugar is estimated to be produced in the current season of 2023-24.

Sugarcane crushing has already stopped in other states including Maharashtra and Karnataka. Special level of sugarcane crushing will be organized in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu during July-August.

Preparations have started for the next season in other states. This season will start from October 2024. The government has set a target of producing 47 crore tonnes of sugarcane in the country for the 2024-25 season.
