Toronto: Data from the government agency, Statistics Canada (Stats Can), reveals that during the first half of the current marketing season—specifically from August 2025 to January 2026—exports of Kabuli chickpeas from Canada surged to 115,470 tonnes.
This represents an increase of 27 percent, or 24,192 tonnes, compared to the 91,278 tonnes shipped during the corresponding period of the 2024-25 season.
In December 2025, Canada exported 22,591 tonnes of Kabuli chickpeas; however, this volume declined to 19,840 tonnes in January 2026. Of this total, 5,355 tonnes were exported to the United States, 3,824 tonnes to Turkey, and 2,750 tonnes to Pakistan.
According to Stats Can, the area under Kabuli chickpea cultivation in Canada is projected to increase by 6 percent during the current year; however, thanks to strong export performance, the resulting surplus stock is not expected to become a burdensome issue.
Meanwhile, indications suggest a bumper harvest of Kabuli chickpeas in Mexico, while Australia has witnessed a massive production of Desi chickpeas. In India as well, the government has expressed
optimism regarding the potential for increased chickpea yields, with the new crop currently arriving in the market. In Canada, the sowing of Kabuli chickpeas is scheduled to take place during April and May.
