New Delhi. During the last Kharif season, the area under sorghum cultivation declined significantly nationally, and in some areas, the crop was damaged due to excess rainfall and floods.
As a result, sorghum production is estimated to have declined from 17.37 lakh tonnes to 11.30 lakh tonnes.
Similarly, in the Rabi season, the area under sorghum cultivation declined to 23.01 lakh hectares, which is 1.21 lakh hectares less than last year's sown area of 24.22 lakh hectares.
Although crop conditions are normal, production is estimated to decline from last year's 31.87 lakh tonnes to 30.98 lakh tonnes due to the reduction in area.
Sowing for the Zaid (summer) season is currently underway. However, sorghum production is limited (30-40 thousand tonnes) during the Zaid season.
In the entire season of 2024-25, 49.55 lakh tonnes of sorghum was produced, which is likely to remain at 42.60 lakh tonnes this time.
