Signs of slowing down of monsoon in northwestern India

New Delhi. Although areas around Delhi remain cloudy and some regions have received heavy rainfall, the Meteorological Department has indicated that the monsoon's progress has slowed down in northwestern India.

While overall rainfall at the national level is above the normal average, significant deficiencies persist in certain regions, particularly in parts of central India and the southern peninsula. This suggests that even though the southwest monsoon has officially covered the entire country, rainfall distribution remains uneven.

The northern boundary of the monsoon currently remains stalled at Barmer, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Agra, Rampur, Bijnor, Karnal and Halwara. In the past couple of days, the monsoon has made limited advancement into parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, and some regions of Jammu and Kashmir. However, it has not progressed at the pace initially anticipated.

According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon may take a few more days to fully cover Delhi and the surrounding NCR region.

Nonetheless, on June 25, good rainfall is expected in several parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, with its influence likely extending into western Uttar Pradesh.

It is noteworthy that the monsoon usually arrives in Delhi around June 30, but this year it arrived a week early. Continuous rainfall in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab,

Haryana, and Rajasthan is supporting the sowing of Kharif crops. However, large parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh are still waiting for significant rainfall.
