Bangkok. Thailand's exporters are struggling hard to export rice during the current year. During the first quarter (January-March) of 2025, the total export of rice from there was stuck at 2.1 million tonnes, which was about 30 percent less than the shipment of the same period last year. Rice export earnings also fell. In view of this, a plan is being made to cut the export target for the year 2025.
During the entire period of 2024, rice exports from Thailand jumped to 99.50 lakh tonnes, which was 13 percent more than 2023 and the highest level in the last six years. Its export earnings also increased by 27 percent to $ 6.434 billion.
In fact, due to the long-term ban on commercial export of white rice and broken rice from India and the increasing global demand, the shipment of Thai rice increased well.
But the change in the scenario in the year 2025 is likely to reduce the export of Thai rice significantly. Rice exports from India have become completely free.
The US has imposed a heavy import duty on Thailand's rice. Thailand's currency has strengthened and the export offer price of Thai rice is running high compared to other rival countries.
The Ministry of Commerce and the Rice Exporters Association have set an export target of 75 lakh tonnes of rice for the year 2025.
The total shipments declined by 30 percent due to a sharp 53 percent decline in the export of 15 percent broken white rice in the first quarter.
