India's rice exports are expected to rise significantly to 215 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 marketing season, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

This is a substantial increase from 144.30 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season, driven by strong domestic production, robust global demand, and the removal of export controls and duties.

India, a leading exporter of both Basmati and non-Basmati rice, has maintained its position as the world's top rice exporter for over a decade.

The USDA report highlights that India's rice production is expected to reach a record 1450 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season, an increase of 71.70 lakh tonnes from the previous year's 1378.30 lakh tonnes.

This growth is attributed to a significant increase in the area of paddy cultivation during the Kharif season, as well as favorable monsoon rains.

With an outstanding stock of 420 lakh tonnes and the expected production, India's total rice availability for the 2024-25 season is estimated at 1870 lakh tonnes.

Of this, 1210 lakh tonnes will be used domestically, while 215 lakh tonnes will be exported. A stock of 445 lakh tonnes is expected to remain at the end of the season.

India's rice exports and production have been strong, with no need for imports as the country remains the largest exporter globally.
