Rainfall 92% Below Normal So Far in March: IMD
★ According to the India Meteorological Department, only 0.99 mm of rainfall was recorded in India between March 1–11, which is 92% below the normal average.
★ Region-wise rainfall was also significantly lower: 85% below normal in the Northeast, 93% below normal in Northwest India, 92% below normal in the South Peninsula, and no rainfall (0%) in Central India.
★ The India Meteorological Department reported that out of 36 meteorological divisions in the country, 20 divisions received no rainfall, while 14 divisions recorded only negligible rainfall.
★ Overall, about 60% of the country has received no rainfall so far, 38% recorded below-normal rainfall, and only 2% recorded near-normal rainfall.
★ During the rabi season, most states have not received rainfall. This lack of moisture in the soil could also impact the upcoming kharif crops. If soil moisture remains low and El Niño conditions intensify, it may negatively affect kharif crop prospects.
