New Delhi. Compared to last year, the area under gram and lentils is increasing during the current Rabi season, and the area under black gram has reached the same level as last year,
but the area under pulses like peas, horse gram, and khesari has lagged behind. Despite this, the gross Rabi pulses production area has increased to 87 lakh hectares, which is 2 lakh hectares more than the 85 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
According to official data, the area under gram, the most important pulse of the Rabi season, has increased by 2.36 lakh hectares from 60.13 lakh hectares last year to 62.49 lakh hectares this year.
This is the figure till November 28. Similarly, the area under lentils has increased by 98 thousand hectares from 10.44 lakh hectares to 11.42 lakh hectares. The area under mung bean has also improved from 14,000 hectares to 16,000 hectares.
On the other hand, compared to last year, in the current Rabi season, as of November 28th, the area under pea production has declined from 6.77 lakh hectares to 6.57 lakh hectares, the area under horse gram has declined from 1.94 lakh hectares to 1.28 lakh hectares,
the area under khesari has decreased from 2.20 lakh hectares to 1.89 lakh hectares, and the area under other Rabi pulses has declined from 2.03 lakh hectares to 1.79 lakh hectares.
For the current Rabi season, the five-year average area under gram (including Kabuli) has been estimated at 10.1 million hectares and that under lentils at 15.13 lakh hectares.
However, by the end of November, the area under gram was lagging behind this normal area by approximately 38.50 lakh hectares.
Madhya Pradesh is the leading producer, but there are no signs of acreage growth there as farmers prioritize wheat, mustard, and lentil cultivation. Chickpea sowing will continue into December, so it's premature to estimate the total acreage.
