India's Rice Availability Expected to Reach 200 Million Tonnes

New Delhi. Driven by massive carryover stocks and record domestic production, India's total rice availability is poised to surge to a new record high. This is expected to not only ensure a smooth supply situation within the domestic market but also guarantee ample stocks for export purposes. A weaker Rupee is further expected to boost exports.
According to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), India's total rice availability for the 2025-26 marketing season is projected to jump to an all-time high of 200 million tonnes (2000 lakh tonnes). This figure comprises a carryover stock of 48 million tonnes from the previous season and a domestic production of 152 million tonnes.
Of this total, 127 million tonnes of rice is expected to be utilized for domestic consumption, while 25 million tonnes could be exported. Due to the significant increase in both domestic consumption and exports, the surplus rice stock remaining at the end of the marketing season is projected to decline to 19.12 million tonnes.
According to the USDA report, during the 2024-25 marketing season, India had a total available rice stock of 192 million tonnes, comprising a carryover stock of 42 million tonnes and a production of 150 million tonnes. Of this, 121.17 million tonnes was utilized domestically, and 22.83 million tonnes was exported, leaving a residual stock of 48 million tonnes at the end of the season.
According to industry analysts, had circumstances been normal, India's rice exports could have witnessed a substantial increase—particularly given that the Rupee has depreciated significantly against the U.S. Dollar—but the ongoing crisis in West Asia is currently hindering export operations.
