At the beginning of 2025, there have been some notable changes in Myanmar’s pulse exports to India.

Black Matpe Exports:

From January to April 2025, Myanmar exported a total of  0.323 million metric tons of urad to India, compared to 0.36 million metric tons during the same period in 2024 with an increase of 16,500 metric tons.

March recorded the highest export volume at 100,755 metric tons, which was 79,587 metric tons more than March 2024's export of 21,168 metric tons.

Pigeon Pea Exports:

Tuar exports, on the other hand, saw a decline of 2,390 metric tons from January to April 2025. A total of 0.119 million metric tons of tuar was exported during this period in 2025, compared to 0.122 million metric tons in the same timeframe in 2024.

Exports to India in April 2025:

In April alone, 54,518.93 metric tons of urad and 42,875.30 metric tons of tur exported from Myanmar to India. For both pulses, these figures are better than those from the previous year.

The data clearly suggests that exporters are focusing more on urad, as it faces less global competition compared to tur. Urad is predominantly produced in Myanmar and recently in Brazil (around 50,000 tons), whereas tuar is imported from Myanmar as well as various African nations.

Myanmar produced about 1 million tons of urad, while tuar production stands at 350,000 tons in Myanmar and 900,000 to 1 million tons  across African countries.
