Production area of Kharif crops at national level reached above 89.29 lakh hectares

New Delhi. After a brief delay, the Union Agriculture Ministry has started releasing data on the production area of Kharif crops. Under this, some crops have shown a good increase in sowing area, while others are still lagging behind compared to last year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the total production area of Kharif crops at the national level reached 89.29 lakh hectares as of June 13, 2025, which is 1.48 lakh hectares more than the 87.81 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year.

Compared to the previous season, the production area of paddy increased from 4.00 lakh hectares to 4.53 lakh hectares, pulses from 2.60 lakh hectares to 3.07 lakh hectares, oilseeds from 1.50 lakh hectares to 2.05 lakh hectares, and sugarcane from 54.88 lakh hectares to 55.07 lakh hectares. The area under coarse grains, including Shri Anna, remained stable at 5.90 lakh hectares.

The sowing area of cotton increased marginally from 13.28 lakh hectares to 13.56 lakh hectares. Among pulses, the sowing area of black gram rose significantly from 18 thousand hectares to 43 thousand hectares,

while the area of pigeon pea (tuvar) declined from 41 thousand hectares to 30 thousand hectares. Sowing of other pulses, including horse gram, remains limited so far.

Among oilseeds, the area of groundnut declined from 71 thousand hectares to 58 thousand hectares. However, the sowing area of soybean jumped from 40 thousand hectares to 1.07 lakh hectares, while sunflower remained steady at 22 thousand hectares.
