Price of small cardamom expected to remain strong in near future

Kochi . Although the recent good rains in Kerala, the leading producing state, have brought some relief to the small (green) cardamom crop, it seems difficult to recover the losses suffered by the crop due to the hot and dry weather of March-April.

The marketing season of 2023-24 is in its final stages and harvesting of new stock of cardamom is likely to begin from the end of next month or beginning of July.

Most of the stock of producers has already been sold, hence the arrival of goods in the auction centers is decreasing.

In last week's auction, only 27-28 tonnes of cardamom arrived and its average price jumped to a little above Rs 2400 per kg, whereas in the previous week's auction the price was a little below Rs 2000 per kg. Kerala is the major producer of cardamom.

Various estimates are being made about the production of the next new crop, whereas the actual situation will be known only in August-September when the first phase of harvesting will be at its peak.

But it is certain that the pipeline of small cardamom is largely empty and the new stock will not be able to put much pressure on the market in the initial phase.

As a result, the price of small cardamom may remain at a high level if the demand from local dealers-stockists, exporters and disavari traders remains strong. Festive demand for cardamom will also start emerging from August.
