Possibility of Storms and Rainfall in Northwest India

New Delhi: The Meteorological Department has forecast the likelihood of storms and rainfall persisting across Northwest India over the next three to four days, a situation that could potentially cause damage to Rabi crops. The arrival of the new wheat harvest has already commenced in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Reports have emerged from several *mandis* (agricultural markets) regarding damage to stocks of gram, mustard, and wheat—brought in by farmers—due to the storms and rains experienced over the past few days; this damage is attributed to the slow pace of government procurement and a lack of adequate logistical arrangements at these centers.
According to the Meteorological Department, cloudy skies accompanied by strong winds—along with the possibility of isolated rainfall—are expected today and tomorrow (April 3 and 4) across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Western Uttar Pradesh. Similar weather conditions are also forecast for several parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Currently, a Western Disturbance is active over eastern Iran and adjoining Afghanistan, while a cyclonic circulation lies over eastern Rajasthan.
A trough extending from eastern Rajasthan is moving towards the Arabian Sea, passing through Gujarat. Consequently, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall or thundershowers in several regions.
