Obstacles Hinder Pea Exports from Ukraine Despite Strong Production

Kharkiv. Although Ukraine has achieved excellent pea production this year and holds substantial exportable stocks, producers and exporters are facing significant difficulties due to stiff competition from countries like Canada and Russia in the global market, alongside disruptions to shipments.

According to trade analysts, Russia's intense offensive has not only brought pea export shipments from Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea region—particularly Odesa—to a near-standstill, but has also disrupted supply lines within the country.

A sharp rise in transportation costs has significantly eroded the competitiveness of Ukrainian peas. Exports to the European Union and the Gulf region (West Asia) have slowed drastically, and the Black Sea shipping route has become unsafe.

Observers note that until transportation costs decrease, pea export performance will remain weak, and uncertainty will persist regarding the access of Ukrainian peas to Asian markets, including India. Ukrainian farmers are neither receiving profitable prices for their peas nor finding much success in selling their stocks.
