News Capsule: Weak Monsoon Heats Up Tur Market; Can Prices Cross ₹9,000?
★ A weak monsoon and slower tur (pigeon pea) sowing during the kharif season have strengthened market sentiment. Wholesale tur prices have risen by around 5% over the past month, while tur dal prices have increased by ₹300–350 per quintal. If rainfall does not improve significantly, prices could move even higher.
★ The market is being supported by higher import prices from Myanmar and African countries, limited stocks at ports, and the weaker rupee. In addition, increased buying by pulse mills ahead of the festive season is providing further support to prices.
★ According to the latest government data, tur sowing is down nearly 18% from last year at 2.48 million hectares. Concerns over lower production due to weak monsoon conditions are expected to keep the market firm in the coming weeks.
★ In the near term, tur prices could rise to around ₹8,600 per quintal. If this level is crossed convincingly, the market may witness a further rally towards ₹9,000–9,200 per quintal.
★ Market participants will closely monitor the progress of the monsoon and the pace of sowing in the coming weeks, as these will be the key factors determining the next price direction.
