News Capsule: Fertiliser Vessels Stuck at Ports Raise Concerns Over Kharif Supply
★ The delay in unloading fertiliser-laden vessels at major Indian ports has raised concerns over the timely availability of fertilisers during the peak kharif sowing season. With monsoon conditions improving in July and sowing gaining momentum, the timely supply of DAP and other fertilisers has become crucial for farmers.
★ At Kandla Port, a vessel carrying around 60,000 tonnes of DAP/NPK has been waiting for a berth since July 14, while another vessel loaded with about 7,000 tonnes of urea is also awaiting unloading. Port congestion, shortage of railway rakes, and logistical bottlenecks have slowed fertiliser movement across the country.
★ Major ports including Kandla, Mundra, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), and Chennai are facing congestion. The situation has been aggravated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, vessel route diversions, monsoon-related disruptions, trailer shortages, and delays in inland transportation.
★ While urea availability remains adequate, the supply of DAP and phosphatic fertilisers continues to face pressure due to limited global availability of ammonia and sulphur. The supply situation is expected to remain tight until logistics and exports from the Middle East return to normal.
