News Capsule: Walnut production: Decline in India, global output rises
★ Global walnut production is expected to increase, but India is likely to see a decline in output. In India, walnut production was about 0.33 lakh tonnes in 2024–25, which is estimated to fall to around 0.30 lakh tonnes in 2025–26.
★ According to the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), global in-shell walnut production for 2025–26 is estimated at around 28 lakh tonnes, about 8% higher than last year. Total global supply is projected to reach about 29 lakh tonnes.
★ In Chile, walnut production this year is estimated at around 1.65 lakh tonnes, about 6% lower than earlier estimates. Meanwhile, production estimates have been raised for the United States and Turkey, while estimates for Ukraine, Spain, Italy and Portugal have been reduced.
★ Despite higher global production, the decline in India’s output could impact domestic supply and prices in the local market.
