News Capsule: Rajasthan Kharif Sowing Down 12% at 3.65 Million Hectares
★ Kharif crop sowing in Rajasthan reached 3.65 million hectares as of June 26, nearly 12% lower than 4.13 million hectares sown during the same period last year. According to the state agriculture department, more than 22% of the state's normal kharif acreage of 16.41 million hectares has been covered so far.
★ Paddy acreage increased to 35,422 hectares from 30,910 hectares a year ago. In contrast, maize sowing declined sharply to 67,624 hectares from 240,869 hectares, while bajra acreage fell to 1.10 million hectares from 1.45 million hectares last year.
★ Among pulses, moong acreage rose to 571,153 hectares from 531,726 hectares, while urad acreage increased to 14,701 hectares from 13,824 hectares a year ago. Total pulses acreage in the state increased to 694,535 hectares compared with 654,800 hectares during the corresponding period last year.
★ The total area under oilseeds declined to 602,924 hectares from 736,706 hectares a year earlier. However, groundnut sowing increased to 561,580 hectares from 515,602 hectares, while soybean acreage dropped sharply to 31,121 hectares from 199,008 hectares last year.
★ Cotton acreage declined to 481,112 hectares from 558,815 hectares a year ago. Meanwhile, sugarcane acreage increased to 3,769 hectares from 3,154 hectares, and guar sowing surged to 374,326 hectares from 163,187 hectares in the corresponding period last year.
★ Rajasthan received 51.5 mm of rainfall during June 1–29, which was 2% above normal. However, the southwest monsoon has yet to advance into the state, missing its normal onset date of June 25. According to the India Meteorological Department, active pre-monsoon conditions have compensated for the shortfall in monsoon rainfall so far.
