News Capsule: Government Procures 57.11 Million Tonnes of Rice in 2025-26, Achieves 99% of Target
★ The Government of India has procured 57.114 million tonnes of rice under the 2025-26 marketing year (as of August 4), achieving nearly 99% of its procurement target of 57.552 million tonnes The procurement is also 5% higher than the 54.285 million tonnes purchased during the corresponding period last year.
★ Procurement during the rabi marketing season registered a significant increase. The government has purchased 8.671 million tonnes of rabi rice so far, up 18% from 7.345 million tonnes in the previous year.
★ Among rabi-producing states, Telangana recorded the highest procurement at 4.269 million tonnes, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1.320 million tonnes, Andhra Pradesh with 1.183 million tonnes, and Odisha with 1.104 million tonnes.
★ During the kharif marketing season, rice procurement from Punjab declined to 10.486 million tonnes, while procurement from Haryana increased to 4.158 million tonnes.
★ The government has approved the commencement of paddy procurement for the 2026-27 marketing year from mid-September in Punjab and Haryana, and from September 1 in Tamil Nadu.
★ Meanwhile, with the country's paddy sowing area currently only 2% lower than last year, another good rice crop is expected, provided the August-September monsoon remains normal.
