News Capsule: Global Pulses Market: Peas, Lentils and Chickpeas
Peas
★ The results of Statistics Canada’s seeding intentions survey did not bring a major surprise to the market. The report suggests that farmers plan to reduce the area under all classes of peas from about 3.5 million acres to 3.1 million acres this year.
★ If yields return to normal levels, production could decline from 3.93 million metric tons last year to around 2.78 million metric tons.

Lentils
★ Supply fundamentals for lentils continue to remain challenging.
★ According to Statistics Canada’s survey, lentil acreage is expected to decline from 4.38 million acres to 4.14 million acres, which is close to the five-year average of 4.16 million acres.
★ Meanwhile, Australia has raised its 2025 lentil production estimate to 2.04 million metric tons, which is 60% higher than 2024. The increase reflects a 10% rise in planted area and a return to normal yields after drought conditions in key growing regions last year.

Chickpeas
★ Global chickpea markets ended the week with little change in prices.
★ In Canada, kabuli chickpea acreage is expected to increase from 541,000 acres to 575,000 acres.
★ Markets had expected farmers to reduce planted area because of lower returns from kabuli chickpeas and rising inventories. However, China’s decision to remove its 100% import duty on Canadian peas is influencing farmers as they finalize their crop planting decisions.
