Mustard Market Monthly Report – April 2025
★ Price Weakness Amid Sharp Drop in Arrivals
★ In April 2025, major mustard mandis across the country witnessed price volatility along with a significant decline in total arrivals. While the month began with high inflows, by the end, arrivals had nearly halved.
Delhi Mandi (42% Condition)
★ Prices started at Rs.6150/quintal and peaked at Rs.6300 on April 10. Subsequently, prices declined steadily to Rs.6000 on April 21, and finally settled at Rs.6050 by April 29. Overall, Delhi mandi saw mostly stable to slightly weak prices during the month.
Jaipur Mandi (42% Condition)
★ Prices opened at Rs.6375/quintal, fell to Rs.6350 on April 3, and rose again to Rs.6400 on April 10. But they dropped to Rs.6250 by April 25, before stabilizing at Rs.6275. Jaipur witnessed constant price fluctuations throughout the month.
Bharatpur (Average Quality)
★ Prices declined steadily from Rs.6100 at the beginning of the month to a low of Rs.5875 on April 18, before slightly recovering to Rs.5910 by the end. However, they remained below the early April level.
Alwar (Average Quality)
★ There was not much volatility here. Prices mostly stayed in the Rs.6000–Rs.6100 range. On April 24, there was a brief spike to Rs.6050, but rates later returned to Rs.5900.
★ Across all mandis, prices hovered around or slightly below the MSP of Rs.5950/quintal.
All-India Arrivals
★ On April 1, total mustard arrivals across India stood at 11.5 lakh bags. By April 29, this had plummeted to 5.25 lakh bags – a nearly 55% decline. This sharp drop in arrivals indicates slower farmer selling and reduced mandi activity, possibly due to mustard being held back on narrow margins.
★ Total arrivals in April 2025 stood at 184 lakh bags compared to 241 lakh bags in March – a notable month-on-month fall.
Future Ahead
★ Despite such a steep fall in arrivals, prices did not rally, indicating that crushing demand for mustard is currently weak.
Increased use of DDGS (Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles) in animal feed has led to a significant drop in demand for mustard meal (khal).
★ Getting rid of DDGS seems difficult, and it may continue to dominate the market ahead.
★ Fortunately, unlike other edible oils, mustard oil is not imported. In fact, its demand has been growing year-on-year.
★ Mustard oil demand is expected to pick up from July ahead of the festive season, which may offer some support to prices going forward.
