Mixed Trend in Lentils Reflects Supply and Demand Dynamics

Winnipeg. Markets in Western Canada are currently witnessing a mixed trend in lentil prices, reflecting the prevailing dynamics of supply and demand. The delivery price for Grade No. 2 large green lentils has reached 25 cents per pound in select centers; however, the stability of this price level remains uncertain.

Trading activity at this price point is extremely limited, and the delivery window is scheduled for the summer months. As the current marketing season gradually draws to a close, buyers are increasingly shifting their focus toward the upcoming new crop.

Prices for the next new crop of large green lentils are being quoted in the range of 24–25 cents per pound, a factor that could exert downward pressure on the prices of existing lentil stocks.

Prices for small green lentils have remained stable at previous levels, currently quoted at 20 cents per pound for Grade No. 1 and 17.5 cents per pound for Grade No. 2. In contrast, prices for red lentils are commanding a premium, being quoted in the range of 24–25 cents per pound.

This year, the acreage dedicated to red lentils is expected to increase across Canada, Australia, and Russia; this could lead to a rise in global supply and availability during the upcoming marketing season. Arrivals of new lentil stocks typically commence in August in Canada and the Black Sea region, and in September–October in Australia.
