The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has outlined ambitious goals to improve its weather forecasting accuracy by 2047. By 2024, the IMD aims to predict the weather for up to three days with zero error and extend its accuracy to 90 percent for five-day forecasts.
On the occasion of IMD's 150th Foundation Day, celebrated on January 14, 2025, a "Vision Documentary" was released, highlighting these targets.
The IMD plans to leverage advanced technology and scientific measures to improve forecasting and provide timely warnings for weather-related disasters such as floods, storms, cyclones, and heatwaves, ensuring that disaster managers can take proactive steps for rescue operations.
The department envisions a future where India becomes one of the few nations where no lives are lost due to natural disasters, aided by accurate and timely weather predictions.
Currently, IMD forecasts are accurate for short durations, but the department is working to extend the time frame and accuracy.
Their long-term plan includes achieving these targets progressively over the next two years, ten years, and ultimately 22 years, gradually improving the effectiveness of their predictions.
