Low Possibility of Changes in Pulses Import Rules
★ The current duty concessions and import policy for pulses are scheduled to expire on March 31, 2026.
★ Looking at the present situation, prices of most pulses are stable, and inflation in pulses has not increased significantly. Because of this, it is widely believed that major changes in the import rules are unlikely.
★ Similar to the existing policy, tur (pigeon pea) and urad (black gram) may continue to be imported duty-free, while lentils and chickpeas may remain under 10% import duty, and peas under 30% duty. There are also expectations of new MoUs for pulse imports for the next five years.
★ At the same time, several global weather agencies have reported a higher probability of El Niño conditions becoming active, which could affect crop production.
★ According to data released by the Agriculture Department, production of tur and urad is lower than last year.
★ Considering all these factors, significant changes in the pulses import policy appear unlikely in the near term.
