Vancouver. The pace of lentil export shipments from Canada was somewhat slow during August 2026, the first month of the current 2026-27 marketing season (August–July). While the harvesting of the new lentil crop began in August, it was frequently interrupted by unseasonal rains. Indications suggest a sharp decline in Canadian lentil production this season; however, substantial carryover stocks mean that total availability will not see a significant drop.
According to data from the government agency Statistics Canada, lentil exports from the country stood at 156,633 tonnes in July but fell by approximately 46 percent to 84,753 tonnes in August. Nevertheless, this volume remained significantly higher than the total exports of 35,984 tonnes recorded in August 2025.
India was the largest buyer of Canadian lentils in August 2026, importing 32,707 tonnes. Algeria ranked second with imports of 6,522 tonnes, followed by the United States in third place with 5,913 tonnes. The remaining volume was exported to other countries.
As for Kabuli chickpeas, exports from Canada totaled 19,255 tonnes in August; this figure was very close to the July shipment volume of 19,301 tonnes but substantially higher than the 12,926 tonnes exported in August 2025.
In August 2026, the largest volume of Kabuli chickpeas—4,879 tonnes—was shipped from Canada to Pakistan, while 4,119 tonnes went to the United States and 2,099 tonnes to Portugal. The remainder was exported to other countries.
