Kharif Rice Government Procurement at 64% of Target
Significant procurement took place in Punjab and Haryana, though the targets were not fully met. Other states also saw good purchases.
Last year, bonuses were given on MSP, leading to higher rice procurement.
However, rice procurement rose 4.3% from last year to 313.13 lakh tons. Procurement from Punjab was 116.30 lakh tons (down 6.5% from last year's 124.35 lakh tons) and from Haryana, 35.99 lakh tons (down from 39.49 lakh tons). The targets for Haryana and Punjab were 40 lakh tons and 124 lakh tons, respectively.
Chhattisgarh's rice procurement by December 31 was 52.84 lakh tons, up 37% from last year's 38.6 lakh tons.
Telangana's rice procurement rose 4% to 28.25 lakh tons, up from 27.11 lakh tons last year; Uttar Pradesh's increased by 5.5% to 23.88 lakh tons (from 22.65 lakh tons); Madhya Pradesh's rose 43.5% to 16.65 lakh tons (from 11.6 lakh tons); Maharashtra saw a 6% increase to 3.7 lakh tons (from 3.5 lakh tons).
Total government procurement is expected to reach 500 lakh tons this season.
Andhra Pradesh's procurement surged 77% to 10.98 lakh tons (from 6.2 lakh tons last year), and Bihar's increased 63% to 6.8 lakh tons (from 4.15 lakh tons last year).
Odisha's procurement till December 31 was 7.87 lakh tons, down 12% from last year's 8.93 lakh tons.
West Bengal's procurement was almost negligible, compared to 3.44 lakh tons last year.
Telangana's rice procurement decreased slightly to 3.63 lakh tons, compared to 3.7 lakh tons last year at this time.
