Higher Wheat Availability Expected for Industry and Trade

New Delhi – On one hand, the Ministry of Agriculture has estimated that India’s domestic wheat production during the 2025–26 rabi season may reach a record high of 120.21 million tonnes. On the other hand, the Ministry of Food has set the wheat procurement target at 30.3 million tonnes, which is almost similar to the total procurement recorded last year.
For the 2025–26 season, the wheat procurement targets have been fixed at 12.2 million tonnes in Punjab, 7.8 million tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 7.2 million tonnes in Haryana, 2.1 million tonnes in Rajasthan, and 1 million tonnes in Uttar Pradesh. These five states together contribute more than 90% of wheat to the central pool.
Apart from these, limited procurement of wheat also takes place in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.
With higher production and relatively lower procurement targets, the industry and trade sector may receive larger wheat stocks this year. This could help maintain a smoother supply and availability of wheat in the open market. However, the procurement targets may still be revised if required.
